A Workshop for Painters
The visual reference: working from photos
Life and perception
CONTENT AND OBJECTIVES
In our digital age it seems many artists automatically turn to using photos as a reference for their work.
Este taller examinará algunas de las cuestiones que rodean a la pregunta «¿Cómo debemos pintar o dibujar de las fotos los artistas figurativos?».
We will consider whether photos truly represent our perception of life and investigate whether photos are a genuinely appropriate starting point or merely convenient for figurative artists to paint or draw from.
Over the course of the two days, through discussions and practical exercises, we will investigate a number of questions including:
- ‘What are the advantages and disadvantages of using photos for informing our visual perceptions of our subject?’
- How does our reading of a photo effect our painting or drawing process and therefore our final results?
- ¿Podría nuestra respuesta a una «pintura en progreso» re-informar nuestra lectura de la foto de referencia?
- ‘Is it truer to copy a photo exactly or use it simply as an aid to memory?’
- ‘Ultimately is painting or drawing from a photo a trap or means of deeper insight?’
Brendan will discuss his thoughts and discoveries on these topics also showing students how these questions have developed his thinking process, techniques and work.
