"Design and composition in the figure"

This workshop is part of a bilogy that Nicolás Uribe will teach in Madrid. Although students can choose to attend one of the workshops independently, they are designed to complement each other.

One of the artist's most important duties when trying to solve a painting is to exercise control over the composition. In a figurative image it is absolutely necessary to identify the overall relationships that exist between the abstract forms that are inscribed in the human body and the dynamics that these generate within the space that surrounds it. The decisions that are made regarding the dimensions of the forms, the character of the edges in the encounter between one form and another, the chromatic relationships and the tonal contrast are of fundamental importance to clearly communicate the intention behind the image.

This workshop is specifically designed to find compositional possibilities when working from nature with the model. Emphasis will be placed on the idea that the objective of the painting should begin with an exercise of representation, and then use the information that is collected by carefully observing and then reinterpreting it and reorganising it based on a particular design.
